A HOLE IN THE VORTEX #2
MATT BALDWIN'S NEWSLETTER: A SHOW, A NEW ALBUM, TWO ZINES, AND WHY YOU SHOULD BE FRIENDS WITH VISIONARY POETS
I am playing an exploratory Gaelic-style solo guitar set at the Philosophical Research Society in Los Feliz on 4/20 with Itasca and Amps For Christ. I will have a couple of new zines for sale (see below), in addition to LPs, cassettes, and some copies of the How To Play Guitar zines, whose numbers are dwindling in anticipation of the release of the collected zines book on Tarantula Imprint. Buy tickets HERE.
My new album, NEW UNIVERSAL SOLAR CALENDAR, will be released on May 28th. It is the product of my long-term music/philosophical collaboration with the brilliant Nico Georis. In terms of scope, this is some of the most ambitious musical work I have ever undertaken, reflecting our mutual interest in using music to explore the edges of known reality. It will be available on the ubiquitous streaming services at the end of next month and, in the meantime, you can pre-order digital/cassette copies HERE (cassettes come with their own zine).

So far Substack has been good to me but it leaves me missing the tangible paper of zine editions. To that end, I decided that I will periodically release zine versions of specific essays that were originally published here. To start, I have prepared copies of DAYS OF MIRACLE & WONDER and THE SECRET DREAMS OF A FOUR TRACK RECORDER in zine format. If you sign up as a paid subscriber to my Substack, then I will send copies of these two little books to you — just DM your mailing address to me. The same goes for those who already subscribe to this substack. Ask and you shall receive.
Eventually, I will set up a page to sell these on bandcamp and they will be available at LA’s best record store, Jacknife Records & Tapes in Atwater Village.
Finally, I am including some footage of my old friend the visionary poet/guitarist, Adam Snider and I going over some lines that he had just composed for the bizarre extended poetic work he is in the process of putting together called, UFO LOVE POEMS. If you ever get the chance you should try reading rough drafts of a poet’s poems back to them over zoom. It’s fun and, especially with a freaker like Adam, usually very funny.
Telescopes and drones descending, created by you billions of years ago which seek your signature on my flesh doorsteps, in my hallways and organs…
I’ve said before that Adam is my greatest discovery. I’m very excited for this book when it’s finished — there will be more info on that here in the fullness of time.
I hope to see you at PRS later this month. Or to drop a package for you in the mail.
Until then…
Yours,
MB
